DELTA State Local Government Service Commission Chairman, Comrade Olumami Oyibo has expressed disgust over the attitude of community development officers in the unified local government service in the state.
Oyibo, who was speaking while playing host to members of the Association of Delta State Local Government Community Development Workers in his office, noted that they (members of the association) have derailed from their duties by engaging themselves in public functions to the detriment of the community in which they operate.
“Community Development Officers are not performing their functions as expected; they are more interested in public functions like Armed Forces Remembrance Day, thereby leaving their main duties which have to do with community mobilisation, community development project and inspection of what people are doing”, he said.
According to him, Community Development Department in the unified local government service in the state should be more proactive and focused in bringing the department to the knowledge of the political class and the community where they operate, adding that it was the responsibility of the community development department to draw the attention of the government to what they ought to do in a community.
He added that it was the duty of the department to encourage communities to carry out projects to the knowledge of the Local Government, pointing out that it was as a result of the docile nature of local government staff that made some people feel that they (members of the association) are doing nothing in carrying out their duties.
