Don’t Publish Inflamatory Stories

Ogeah To Journalists
BY CHARLES EMENI
TWO weeks to the general elections, Delta State Information Commissioner, Chike Ogeah (Esq) has called for extreme caution over inciting information the media in the State is likely to chun out to the public.
“You’ve got to be extra careful with the things you publish; you must be mindful of the things you feed people with, especially those that are inflammatory and divisive, no matter the money paid for such information, particularly at this very critical state of our election,” he posited.
The Commissioner, who gave the advice in a “meet the media chat” in his office recently reminded journalists in the State that, the advise was imperative because, the information power of the media was unparallel, and there was the need for journalists to avoid crisis prone reportage.
He said, to this end, as information Commissioner in the State, his commitment was to help the State Gov Dr Emmanuel Udughan achieve proper flow of information, adding that his doors are always open to them to verify any information.
He reminded journalists that, there were so many good things to report about in Delta State. “In fact, Gov Emmanuel Udughan should be given accolade for the peace and security in the State. Remember that in order to achieve this great feat, Delta State is one of the very few States in the country that had high-tech communication gadgets during the era of kidnappings.
He said, “Publishing falsehood or information that is capable of causing trouble does not do anyone no good as people including our very selves may be affected. When there is crisis, many are bound to suffer. And when it comes, nobody remembers property; rather all that would matter would be to save one’s life”.
The Nigerian Civil war experience, he said, was enough eye opener for everybody, particularly those who experienced it when the crisis erupted, caused the death of many and left many innocent children as orphans, as most parents were killed.
He said from the onset Gov Emmanuel Uduaghan was to ensuring that an Anioma indigene emerged as the governor of Delta State, the rumours making the rounds notwithstanding, adding that, that Senator Ifeanyi Okowa’s emerged the PDP flagbearer was not made possible by only Anioma indigenes, as his choice was made possible by all the senatorial districts in the State; therefore anybody fighting Gov Uduaghan will be fighting God.
