Elections: Banks In Delta Resort To Early Closure

BY ANDREW IKEHI
FOR the second time in two days, banks in Delta State, particularly in Asaba, the state capital and Agbor, the administrative headquarters of Ika South Local Government Area of the state, closed transactions few minutes after midday.
The unusual event which happened on Monday and yesterday, has continued to puzzle majority of the bank customers, particularly those who besieged the banks between the hours of 2:00pm to 3:00 pm for their usual transaction as no reason was advanced by the bank authorities for their early closure.
When The Pointer visited one of the commercial banks along the ever-busy Nnebisi Road by 3:00 pm, some of the bank officials who were sighted leaving the premises, kept sealed lips over the development as our reporter inquired to know the reason for the unusual development.
However, some of the bank’s customers who were locked outside the banking halls after the unusual closing hour experience, noted that the action of the banks may not be unconnected with palpable fears surrounding the result of the March 28, general elections.
Meanwhile, one of the security personnel attached to one of the banks in the area said, “Yes o, we were asked to close the gate by 12:30 pm and not to allow customers after that time, adding that the reason is because of the election result as nobody wants to take chances”.
