NASS Leadership Composition: A ‘Coup’ Against South-South –Igbini

BY LUCKY OYIBO
THE Delta State Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Comrade Emmanuel Igbini has said the composition of the two leadership of the National Assembly is not in the best interest of the people of the South-South Region, saying it is a posture of returning Nigeria back to the three regional structures practiced in 1960s.
Comrade Igbini, who spoke to The Pointer in an exclusive interview in Asaba, during the week, said the composition of the leadership of the House of Representatives and Senate failed to entrench equity and fairness among the six geopolitical zones and component states of the federation and likely to portend danger to the socio-economic and infrastructural development of the South-South Region.
He said what they would have done was to adopt the principle of doctrine of necessity to make sure that the six most important positions in Nigeria today under this democracy are shared evenly among the six geopolitical zones in the country.
“I mean the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the President of the Senate of Nigeria, the Deputy President of the Senate, the Speaker of House of Representatives and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives should be shared among each of the six geopolitical zones in the country.
“Now that President Muhammadu Buhari has emerged as President and he is from the North West and then, the Vice-President is from the South West, our position is that the principle of equity which has been adopted by the PDP and has stabilized the polity and has given sense of belonging to the six geopolitical zones should be maintained.
“Unfortunately, from the outcome of the National Assembly so called elections they did last week, you will agree with me that the South-South has now been excluded for the first time”, Igbini noted.
According to him, the composition of the National Assembly is like returning us through the backdoor to the three regional structures that the country used to have in 1960.
He appealed to those who mean well for this country to rise up peacefully to demand a total and strong condemnation of what he called coup d’état.
Comrade Igbini, who is the immediate past Director-General of Delta State Direct Labour Agency (DLA), noted that they cannot exclude people who are most critical that produce the bulk of the oil that sustain the Nigeria states.
‘We did not go for any referendum to see whether we should jettison the six geopolitical zone arrangement and return back to the three regional structures which we totally condemn.
“So, you have only the Yorubas, the Ibos and now the Northerners running the affairs of this country. This is a very dangerous signal. I think that President Buhari who is a man of principle and a man who would not like to sideline anybody should rise up to this injustice and amend the wrong”. Comrade Igbini noted.
If they cannot find South-South Senator from the APC, you have them in the PDP. After all, the Deputy Senate President is not an APC candidate. He is a PDP candidate. Why did it not extend the same thing to the South-South geopolitical region to allow the zone have a position as a matter of right?
