Ex-Union Boss Worried Over Rising Cost Of Students’ Elections

A former Students’ Union leader in Delta State, Comrade Michael Akpobire has described as worrisome, the increasing cost of students’ union electioneering campaigns processes in the country.
Akpobire who spoke during the inauguration of the newly elected executive committee of the National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU), which was held recently at Labour House, Asaba, said that students’ union elections should not ordinarily cost those seeking election into the union so much.
He lamented that those who seek for students’ union presidency in most of the tertiary institutions in the country now spend more money in prosecuting their electioneering campaigns than politicians contesting for a chairmanship position of a local government council in Nigeria.
According to him, the phenomenon is very unhealthy for students who are the leaders of tomorrow, adding that there was urgent need to drastically reduce the cost of students’ union electioneering campaigns in the country in order to promote excellent leadership in the union.
Akpobire who was delivering his keynote address titled “The Rudiments Of Excellent Leadership” during the ceremony said that students should not sell their future because of the peanuts of today.
Speaking further, he admonished the leadership of NADESSTU to always promote financial probity, saying “there should be an aura of accountability in student unionism, even as he stressed the need for the executive committee members to do things that would promote students unionism and welfarism.
Earlier in his remarks, the chairman at the ceremony, Chief Christopher Ominimini Obiuwevbi who was represented by Comrade Clement Udi, urged the leadership of NADESSTU to stand firm in projecting NADESSTU to higher height, pointing out that it was the responsibility of the leadership of the association to channel the request of the students to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
The highlight of the ceremony was the administration of oath of office on the newly elected executive committee members of NADESSTU by Comrade (Barr.) Dumbili Chinonso.
