AS 45.8 billion kilowatts of heat is allegedly emitted daily from the flow station into the atmosphere, it has been revealed that gas flaring is a major cause of low sperm count in men.
The revelation was made by Chief Monday Itoghor, a climate expert and award recipient, on Thursday at the first Delta State NGOs forum summit held at Swiss Hotel, Okpanam Road, Asaba.
While lauding the efforts of the forum, he appealed to all bodies concerned to tackle the issue of gas flaring, which , he alleged t be a major cause of low sperm count in men. He advised that the flared gas should be properly managed, while those residing within close range of the flow stations should be evacuated out of the area.
He said, “Gas flaring is a major cause of low sperm count in men. 45.8 billion kilowatts of heat is emitted daily from the flow station into the atmosphere on a daily basis, you can imagine the effect of this on the people and how many men would have been infected. This has a significant effect on homes”.
Mean while, the Forum of Delta State Non-Governmental Organisations (FDSN), has launched a no more business as usual campaign to bring about development to and progress to Deltans.
The coordinator of the forum, Mr Okezi Odugala, while addressing the gathering, noted that the essence of the launch was to key into the mantra of change along with the government of the day in order to tackle the development problems associated with this new era.
Odugala noted that the business as usual syndrome, was no more working as ,instead of bringing about the desired change to the people, doing business in the same pattern was more like moving round in circles.
The limiting old style had degenerated Nigeria from its once highly respectable stances, he added.
His words: “business as usual is not working anymore. This is a new era. What seemed to be working in the past without lasting result, won’t work in this new era of accountability and transparency in governance. It’s time to have a fixed determination and an indomitable will to tackle the problems that this new era brings. As long as we choose to do business as usual, we will never be all we were meant to be in terms of a nation that can stand tall in the midst of others”.
The campaign, according to him, was instrumental to practising “what the forum preaches.”
The campaign, he said, would involve the forum playing its imperative role in ensuring the actualization of the fresh national orientation towards achieving a corruption-free society, hence, the forum is resolved to serve as a watch dog and beam search light on things done properly and those inaptly done. He added that organization of community forum, distribution of sensitization materials, including T-shirts, stickers, posters, billboards and other items to the doorstep of every Deltan home.
