D elta To Attract Foreign Grants To Improve Water Supply

DELTA State Commissioner for Water Resources Development, Mr. Fidelis Okemmo Tilije says, the state would tap into the various programs of foreign agencies to attract funding grants to address the issues of water supply in the state in order to reach millennium set target of 2015.
Tilije made this remark, while speaking with the press on assumption of office to pilot the affairs of the Ministry of Water Resources.
Acknowledging water as one of the basic necessities of life, Tilije said that much importance is attached to water like the air we breathe in, contrary to what is obtainable in the developing countries like Nigeria.
He noted that the tendency in developing countries is that there has been inadequate funding to bring to reality the normalcy that should naturally be attained in provision of water.
He stated that the developed countries understand the fact that inadequate funding has been a major issue in the provision of water and haven put in place so many funding agencies to assist the developing countries in meeting the enormous funding required in this regard.
“Coming from my background, I intend to tap seriously from such funding arrangements which often times require counterpart funding from both the state and local governments and in some cases the community. I will do my best in reaching the state government to assess these various funding so that we can move from where we are now to where we ought to be in line with the millennium target”, he promised.
He noted that His Excellency, the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa had at a time superintended the affairs of the ministry and already has the fore knowledge of the importance of the ministry, adding that he will reach out to him to see how they can assess the enormous funding grants the developed World agencies have been able to put in place to enable them meet the minimum standard. “We will work on that because funding is a major issue”, he noted.
The Commissioner also noted that technology is the key in achieving the required standard in water provision, promised to put in place, the various water works necessary to achieve that, talk with people, bring in foreign experts and pool resources together to realize the millennium vision.
He also promised to go through the foundations laid by the past Commissioners of the Ministry and put in his best to bring the dreams and aspirations of Deltans to reality, adding that he had met with one of the foreign funding agencies with aim of getting them fund water projects which would accordingly pass through executive approval.
Earlier, the commissioner was taking through a familiarization tour round the ministry of water resources by the permanent secretary, Barr. Hyacinth Osuhor.
