Modern Driving School Before Year’s End
THE Delta State Government has announced that it will establish an ultra-modern driving school in the state at the cost of N270 million to train potential drivers on modern driving techniques. The school, according to the Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Bernard Igbakpa, will become operational before the end of the year.
In a society where the attitudes of many drivers as well as the driving culture is poor, with few avenues for proper training of potential drivers, nothing can be more heart-warming than this initiative by the Uduaghan administration.
A well-equiped driving school will eliminate the practice where driving lessons are offered by drivers who are hardly versed in driving. It will obviously be a place to be for many potential drivers as the school environment will definitely provide for both theoretical and practical aspects of driving as well as driving tests for students before certification. Being well-trained in driving skills will definitely lead to better attitudes by drivers and greater sanity on our roads.
We call on the private sector and various stakeholders in the transport sector, including the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), in the state to assist in making the proposed driving school a pride of place for potential drivers, especially as well-trained drivers versed in traffic regulations will significantly reduce road accidents and the frequent loss of lives on our roads.
Given the benefits of a well-equipped driving school in the state, it will obviously attract a large number of students when it finally commences operations.
There is no doubt that private sector participation will enhance the success of this initiative. It would be recalled that past collaborations between government and the private sector had contributed significantly in boosting the state’s mass transit scheme where the Uduaghan administration had donated buses to private transport companies in the state.
There is no gainsaying the fact that having better and well-trained drivers with full understanding of driving regulations, will be a great asset to the state as well as being an important step towards ensuring safety of lives on our roads.
