AGRICULTURE:THE OKOWA STORY

SCRIPTS BY MONDAY UWAGWU
IN every society in today’s world, there is hardly any sector of the economy that is as strategic as agriculture.
And the reason is this: The multifarious elements of significance of the sector are so diverse and far-reaching that, of the truth, hardly anything in today’s world can with it compare.
And what are they?
Well, as is evident, agriculture has legion benefits, not the least of which are the following:
(A) SOURCE OF FOOD FOR MAN
Without an iota of doubt, one of the single most vital needs of man is food, natural or processed. This is because he requires it-food-to sustain not just his life, but also his health, and even closely related to that, his level of productivity.
In whatever shape, form or frequency that man requires his fpineapple-farmingood, he has just one source to get it-agriculture. This strategic role of agriculture in this regard-providing food for man-is crucially vital in the sense that, without food, man is just but a vegetable on scorched soil, and ,therefore, incapable of survival, how much more living life to the fullest optimisation of his potentials.
(B) SOURCE OF RAW MATERIALS FOR INDUSTRY
Aside of its direct role as the only source of food for man-and animals, I should add-agriculture is also a readily available source of inputs, technically called raw materials, for industry, particularly the produce processing segment of it.
(C) JOB CREATION
It is obvious, at least, from the submissions in the preceding paragraphs, that agriculture provides food for man and raw materials for industry.
However, apart from the two strategic roles named above, agriculture ensures one other key thing in society-provision of jobs.
In this sense, both those at the level of peasantry and mechanised engagement, agriculture ensures that jobs are created for those involved in it. In fact, aside of the direct creation of jobs, which agriculture supplies in millions across the world, the sector equally provides engagements for teachers of the subject and researchers in the field.
(D) BOOST TO TECHNOLOGY
The world over, researchers in agriculture and its related issues have proudly added to the world’s growing stock of scientific and technological engagements. Some of the technologies have found rich application in not only agriculture, but also in other spheres of human endeavour.
(E) SUSTAINING LIFE, BOOSTING HEALTH
One of the indirect roles of the food, which agriculture provides for man, is the capacity to sustain life, by boosting the health of the human person.
Given that health is wealth, the enormous role of agriculture in this regard cannot be over-emphasised in the life of man.
(F) ENHANCING THE CAUSE OF PEACE
By providing food for man, helping meeting his need for industrial raw materials and creating jobs for him, agriculture actively encourages man to be at peace both with himself and others. The truism in this saying is best driven home by the saying that a hungry man is an angry man. Another wise crack related to this –the idle mind is the devil’s workshop.
By creating jobs, therefore, agriculture has helped the cause of global peace by the active provision of food, and by effectively whittling the incidence of idleness-unemployment, the effects of which harm the cause of peace and its sustainability.
