PDP’s Decisive National Convention

After a prolonged period of internal wrangling that was resolved through the judgment of the Supreme Court which validated the executive committee led by Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi as the authentic leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party steps up its rebuilding effort as it holds a National Convention in Abuja tomorrow, Saturday, December 9, 2017.
The convention is unique for a special reason: It is the first time the party is meeting without the spectre of a parallel leadership or litigations hanging over it. It is also significant as the convention is coming at a time the nation is gearing up for the 2019 general elections, the first PDP will contest as an opposition party.
While the party was embroiled in leadership tussle, it robbed off on the polity as a vibrant opposition party, a critical ingredient for a true democracy, was lacking. As the delegates gather in Abuja, they should be mindful that their responsibility is not just to their party but more importantly
to the country. They owe Nigeria a duty to build a stable party to offer a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Beyond that, a stable PDP will also put the ruling party on its toes and ensure that the knowledge that the electorate has a choice should it be dissatisfied with the performance of the ruling party will make it strive to give the people the best it can offer.
For the organisers of the convention, it is imperative that they put all measures in place to ensure that the voting process
that will lead to the emergence of an elected National Executive Committee is conducted in an atmosphere devoid of controversy and rancour. By adhering strictly to its Constitution
and guidelines for the emergence of a new leadership, the PDP will, in the process, lay the template for an enduring culture of internal democracy in party politics.
We are excited that our own Governor , Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, as Chairman of the Convention Committee, is driving
the rejuvenation of the PDP. He is the emerging face of moderation and integrity that is increasingly being relied on to steer the party on the path of rectitude. As Governor of Delta State, he has charted a fresh course in the conduct of state and party affairs with respect and dignity for all and by all.
T
hose virtues will be called into play as the party faithful hold this crucial convention. We urge him to continue to uphold and insist on these virtues that have distinguished his stewardship in Delta State and use them to steer the convention to success.
T
o the chairman and other leaders that will emerge at the end of the election, the days ahead will be no less challenging than the heady days the party has just survived. The new leadership will have the task of preparing the PDP for the forthcoming general elections in 2019 where it will be in the unfamiliar position of challenging a ruling party.
The key is playing by the rules, mobilising the entire party structure, especially the youth, and respect for the outcome of primary elections that will be conducted in the months leading to the general elections.
As the delegates go about their business tomorrow, we wish all of them successful deliberations and elections. They should be guided by the fact that, at the end of it all, a viable opposition makes our democracy stronger and gives the people the choice to alternative developmental strategies. This fact should guide their actions at this crucial convention.
