Delta Special Scholarship Scheme: 47 Awardees Get N5m Each

BY AUSTINE ETAGHENE

A second batch of 47 awardees who made first class in their degree examinations have been given scholarship by the Delta State Government under its Special Scholarship scheme.

Presenting the awardees a cheque of N5 million each at a brief ceremony at Government House, Asaba, yesterday, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan said the occasion was a clear testimony of the state government’s readiness to give education its rightful place in the scheme of things.

On the benefits of the programme, the governor noted that it has opened up new possibilities for students to strive for the highest class of degree.

“When this scheme was introduced in 2010, a total of 36 persons benefited from it. But this year alone, the number has increased to 47 persons. I was reliably informed that in 2012, the number has risen to 52 beneficiaries” he added.

Moreso, the governor re-marketed that whereas he is passionate about the programme, it is obvious that it has instilled academic discipline and galvanized academic competition among students.

While congratulating the awardees, Governor Uduaghan reminded them that their choice was not  result of long legs” but purely based on their intellectual ability and academic excellence.

He directed the Ministry of Higher Education to allow recipients studying abroad to continue with their post graduate studies before coming home to embark on the mandatory National youth service corps scheme.

The governor who also called for measures to accommodate medical students in the scheme, advised the awardees to be good ambassadors of the state as they proceed to pursue their Post-University programme in any university of their choice world-wide.

In his welcome address the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof Hope Eghagha, spelt out the criteria for qualifying for the award to include a 1st class performance in their degree examination and must be Deltans.

While saying that the first batch of awardees are being monitored by his Ministry, Prof Eghagha disclosed that over N200 million was approved for disbursement in the second batch.

He also announced an approval of over N637 million for 2010/2011 students Special Assistance Scheme while 343 children of deceased civil servants and 99 physically challenged students have been awarded scholarship to a tune of N17.4 million.
