DElta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan yesterday described agriculture as a very useful instrument for mass empowerment with a call on stakeholders to intensify their investments in the sector.
The governor spoke in Asaba while announcing the postponement of the launch of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) for youths and women in the state.
He said agriculture is a very lucrative venture with more socio-economic rewards than other sectors of the economy. In what looked like a question and answer session, Uduaghan stressed the importance of farming, urging youths and women to use it to improve their lives.
According to the governor, a successful farmer would never be dependent on the government or others for a living.
On the postponement of the launch of the SURE programme, Uduaghan hinged the decision on the inability of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okojo-Iweala to get a flight to Asaba.
According to him, bad weather occasioned by heavy rainfall that lasted for hours in Asaba prevented the finance minister, expected to chair the occasion, from taking off in Abuja, yesterday.
“Dr. Ngozi Iweala is very passionate about this programme that is why she wanted to be here personally to launch it but was unable to make it because of the bad weather.
“She has been at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja since 9 a.m. (yesterday) but could not fly”, the governor explained.
